NPM

Impacts - Problems - Issues

Broadly the impacts of the NPM can be seen in following aspects.

  • Increased Knowledge base

  • Cost reduction

  • Livelihoods improvement

  • Environment

  • Institution strengthening

Knowledge Base
  • Created Awareness to 5337 farmers who were involved in the program (with around 15% drop-outs)

  • Each farmer attended about 7 training programs

  • A resource pool of 146 persons (95 village workers + 19 CRPs + 42 MMS EC=146 persons) was developed having knowledge on pest management

  • 285 Farmer resource persons were developed who would be helping in  scaling up the NPM program in 2006-07

  • Gram Panchayats members were oriented and actively involved in 33 special field days & participated in exposure visits.

  • A total no. of 1300 farmers participated in special cluster melas (in 3 mandals of red gram area) to share their experiences. Knowledge dissemination took place in the mode of farmer to farmer interaction.

Cost reduction
  • In Red gram the pest management cost was reduced to 50% (ie Rs 350 to 700/ac) on the investments on chemicals ranges Rs 1000 to 2500/- per acre

  • A cost reduction of Rs 800/- per acre. There is a potential saving of Rs 21,67,000 in red gram alone by 2500 farmers. (Compared with the yearly regular savings by the groups - 14,40,000/-

  • In Castor - it was saving upto Rs. 250 per acre (this year relatively low) Farmers faced severe botrytis problem on the crop.

  • In Ground nut  there is not much cost difference but reported normal yield.

Livelihoods improvement
  • 918 Qtls of neem procured by MMS @ Rs. 2.00per kg from local neem collectors thus providing wage labour to that extent.

  • Employment generated through processing the neem by 7 Neem pulverize units (about 500 qtls powder processed)

  • Chemicals replaced by Wage days.

Institutions
  • Samakhya working with men fetched recognition from the farming community.

  • Good relations established with Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs)

  • Linkages established with other institutions like CSA and WASSAN.

Problems and Issues

  • Initial acceptance from the farmers on NPM  was a difficult exercise and it needed a more credible reach

  • There were 15% drop-outs from the program, 3% from castor and 12% from Red gram farmers.

  • Because of bondage with Pesticide dealers, farmers didn’t enroll in the program.

  • Large scale facilitation was a problem

  • Institutional bottlenecks in facilitation

  • Labour intensive program

  • Taking up in large area is still an issue

  • Lack of Credit linkages

  • Monitoring Intensity
