Drinking
water security is an important result that a watershed
project could aim at. Drinking water related issues are
commonly discussed at several stages of the project. An
attempt is made here to "track' the efforts made by
project in this theme.
It is very interesting to see that only in 50% of
problematic villages (from dri nking water point of
view), actual attempts are made to address this issue.
Watershed Committee from one of the four villages (which
attempted to resolve the drinking water problem) approached
several agencies including Grama Panchayati to solve their
problem. User Groups and SHG voluntarily worked to complete
the tasks of drinking water supply project. This truly
reflects the institutional capacities (so called social
capital) of the villagers. Another common approach was to
ensure that water harvesting structures are located near
drinking water sources (in three villages). It may be
observed that even without much coordinated efforts by
project authorities, facilitators and communities; nature
itself is so generous that drinking water problems are
resolved in 75% of sample villages, as a result of several
watershed interventions. If the human being could work
together in a cohesive manner, the results could be much
better. |
