Finger Millet (Ragi) Intensification: Applying Principles of SRI - A Training Report
WASSAN Millets Update | June 3, 2016

Finger Millet (Ragi) is an important millet crop in the north coastal tribal areas of Andhra Pradesh, both in the tribal food cultures and in the farming systems. The average productivity is around 400 kg per acre. As a part of the "Siri Dhanyam" program, a training programme was organized on improved agronomic measures and application of SRI principles to improve productivity without chemical inputs. Lead Technical Agency (LTA) had organized a training programme on SRI on Ragi Cultivation on 21st May 2016 held at Laya Resource Centre, Paderu, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. 35 CRPs / Best Farmers and 15 Field Assistant Staff have attended this training. Trainees have experienced using tools in growing ragi through SRI principles and each group has planned to grow ragi by SRI principles in 50 acres each. Due to having good sign on rainfall prediction in this Kharif, farmers can able to get better production by adapting innovative practices like SRI or Guli method on Ragi. Special thanks to Sri. Jacob Nellithanam for guiding and supporting as a resource person.
