WWF Dialogue Bulletin - April 2006 - Issue No. 19

‘’Our partners have presented several practical difficulties in promoting SRI method rice cultivation. Agriculture is extremely complex activity. Adaptation of many new methods like SRI will take time, many issues such as weeding etc., need to be sorted out. The methods need to be modified based on soil types, rainfall and farmers’ preferences. What is interesting about SRI is a continuous dialogue with farmers, civil society and the government agencies resulting in several adoptions and modifications. Every one is learning and SRI is still evolving’.

Research Projects / Reports

The Prospects and Impacts of System of Rice Intensification Adoption in Sri Lanka - The purpose of this project is to make an assessment on the adoption pattern, economics and resource conservation potential of SRI (System of Rice Intensification) in Sri Lanka and derive research and, development and policy implications.  This should provide an improved knowledge on the microeconomics, resource conservation potential and equity impacts of SRI adoption.

Comparison of Productivity of System of Rice Intensification and Conventional Rice Farming Systems in the Dry-Zone Region of Sri Lanka - Sarath P. Nissanka and Thilak Bandara - Overall results suggested that the higher grain yield production in the SRI farming system may be attributed to the vigorous and healthy growth, development of more productive tillers and leaves ensuring greater resource utilization in the SRI compared to conventional transplanting and broadcasting systems. Therefore, SRI farming systems could be introduced to small-scale rice farmers in Sri Lanka as a sustainable farming system.

SRI, THE SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION: LESS CAN BE MORE - We recently learned about a method of raising rice that produces substantially higher yields with the planting of far fewer seedlings and the use of fewer inputs than either traditional methods (i.e., water) or more 'modern' methods (chemical fertilizer or agrochemicals).  It involves using different practices for plant, soil, water and nutrient management.  This system of rice intensification has been successfully used in a number of countries (although so far mostly in Madagascar).

THE SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION (SRI) AS A METHODOLOGY FOR REDUCING WATER REQUIREMENTS IN IRRIGATED RICE PRODUCTION - Norman Uphoff held at IRRI, Los Baños, Philippines, March 7-8, 2006 - Growing evidence indicates that the challenge of reducing water consumption in the rice sector can be met not with a compromise or some second-best solution, but in a positive-sum way with multiple benefits. Practices are available for growing rice with less water so that the productivity of the land, labor and capital used in rice production is raised all at the same time while making water more productive. This comes basically from nurturing roots rather than drowning them.

System of Rice Intensification in India - Innovation History and Institutional challenges - Innovation in the agricultural sector can come from a variety of sources. However, in the latter part of the 20th century, the most heralded improvements upon previous practice have come from scientific research whose results were converted into technological applications. The location and expansion of agricultural research in large, formal institutions after World War II eclipsed the earlier ad-hoc leadership in technical change that had derived from agricultural practitioners.
