Cauvery delta is said to be the rice of Tamil Nadu<=

and rice is the predominant food in the delta. Rice followed by rice is the
roping system prevailing in cauvery delta zone.
Considering the water availability, lab our demand and economics of
cultivation, it is felt that the SRI method of cultivation of rice will imp=
rove
the grain yield less input, lab our and water. Hence, this SRI method of
cultivation was adopted in large scale of soil and water Management Research
Institute, Thanjavur. During khariff
season of 2004-05, the objective os to study the
feasibility of SRI in larger area and to assess the performance of promising
rice varieties under SRI.

sp; Four
rice varieties viz., ADT36, ADT43, ADT45 and ADT47 were tested at the age o=
f 14
days and 25 days after nursery sowing. The recommended package of SRI viz.,
young seedling, one seedling/ hill, square planting , =
cono
weeding, intermittent irrigation and LCC based N management were adopted.

the varieties tested the performance of ADT43 and ADT47 was found to be bet=
ter
with more number of productive tillers/ m2 and higher grain yield when 14 d=
ays
old seedlings was used for transplanting. Reduction in yield was observed in
the aged seedlings in all the varieties under SRI. The crop duration was
reduced by 5 to 6 days under SRI with 14 days old seedlings.
