An
experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station (Paddy), Sirsi in hill zone of Karnataka to evaluate the SRI m=
ethod
of rice cultivation in comparison with Normal Method of cultivation during =
kharif seasons of 2004 and 2005. During 2004, variety viz., Abhilash was used. During 2005, two varieties viz., <=

class=3DSpellE>Abhilash and MTU 1001 were used. In SRI method, ten days old seedli=

transplanted at a spacing of 25 cm x 25 cm. Weeding was done with rotary weeder for 4 times starting from 15 DAT with an inter=

10 days. As the experimental =
area
comes under high rainfall zone, the water was regulated as per recommendati=
on
during the period of less rainy periods only. In normal method, age of seedling =
(28
days old), spacing (20 x 10 cm), weeding, water regulation etc. were follow=
ed
as per the existing recommendations. In both the methods, recommended dose =
of
manure (FYM 10 t/ha) and fertilizer (75:75:87.5 kg NPK/ha) were used. The results of kharif
2004 indicated that the highest grain yield (6557 kg ha-1), straw yield (70=
15
kg ha-1), gross return (Rs. 43080 ha-1) and net
return (Rs. 26615 ha-1) were recorded in SRI me=
thod
of rice cultivation as compared to normal method. The yield parameters were
also significantly superior in SRI method of rice cultivation. The results of kharif
2005 indicated that there was no significant difference between SRI and
