versus Traditional method of Rice Cultivation (TRC)

study was initiated for two seasons in the crop year of 2005-2006 to make a
comparative study on SRI vs TRC with special em=
phasis
on physiological effects of SRI method on rice plant. The experiment was
conducted in
split–split design with six varieties two each from hybrids, basmati
group and high yielding varieties(HYV) under two spacing of 25x 25 cm
(recommended for SRI) and 20x10 cm (recommended for TRC). The methodology
followed was based on System of rice intensification (SRI) and Traditional =
method
of rice cultivation (TRC).

nbsp; The
study revealed that, rice cultivation based on SRI cultivation was superior=
to
traditional method of rice cultivation under 25x25 cm spacing than under 20=
x10
cm spacing. Among the six varieties from different groups, hybrids were
superior to Basmati and HYV for grain yields. However dry matter production=
was
on par with high yielding varieties. The Basmati group of varieties showed =
poor
performance under SRI cultivation in relation to TRC. SRI cultivation under
25x25 cm spacing was superior to 20x10 cm spacing for various physiological
parameters such as root growth and leaf area index. The yield attributing
characters such as tiller number, panicles per m2, spikelet number per panicle and grain yield were supe=
rior
under SRI cultivation at 25x25 cm spacing. Under SRI, yield was highly
influenced by tiller number, root growth and spikelet<=
/span>
number, grain, number per panicle. Whereas under TRC, yield was influenced =
by
plant height, chlorophyll content, leaf weight and stem weight.
