is the most important food crop of the world. In India
it is grown from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and North East to West Coast at varied al=
titude,
soil types and agro-ecological situations.=
Rice yields have and reached a plateau under the present system of
cultivation under flooded fields. Therefore, we need to look for alternativ=
es
to existing practices. System of rice intensification (SRI) originated in <=
st1:country-region
w:st=3D"on">Madagascar
seems to show promise in this aspect. The most important consideration give=
n in
SRI is utilization of early seedling vigour und=
er
wider spacing, maintaining field in water saturated but not flooded state a=
nd
use of organics for obtaining higher grain yield. This results in saving of most cos=
tly
inputs like water and chemical nutrients.

A
field experiment conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Titabar, Assam in 2005 to evaluate the performance of=
SRI
with five other crop establishment methods revealed that SRI out yielded (4=
.76
q/ha) all other methods except Integrated Crop Management (5.11q/ha), which=
was
a modified method of SRI. The number of effective tillers was the highest in
SRI (315/m2).
