Production growth of rice was marv= elous over 3 decades with the introduction of high yielding varieties, irrigation water and chemical fertilizers. But productivity has now become stagnated or even declining under exhaustive cropping sequences in irrigated ecosystem. = In this critical juncture rice growers have limited options to increase the ri= ce productivity when land and water resource are dwindling and cost of cultiva= tion is soaring. Among the new alternatives for increasing rice productivity, system of rice intensificat= ion (SRI) ushers new hope to the farmers at home and abroad. Yield performances of SRI vary dep= ending on the input management practices, geographical location, variety and natur= al resource management in different parts of the country. <o:p></o:p></= p> <o:p> </o:p> Keeping this in view, efforts have been made to study the impact of water regimes a= nd organic sources of nutrient on the growth and yield performances of ‘= IET 4094’ rice grown in summer season of <st1:place w:st=3D"on">West Beng= al</st1:place> situation during 2006. Five w= ater regimes viz. W1: shallow submergence of water (2-3 cm), W2<= /sub>: continuous soil saturation, W3: alternate wet and drying at 4 da= ys interval, W4: alternate wet and drying at 6 days interval and W<= sub>5: Traditionally transplanting practice (4 hills with 15 cm x 15 cm) with continuous pounding of 5 cm and 3-levels of organic manures @ 25% of recommended dose of N viz. M1: FYM, M2: Mustard cake = and M3: no organic manure were tested. Crop was transplanted on 3<su= p>rd week of January following single hill with a spacing of 25 cm x 25 cm with = the seedling of 32 days age and with the fertilization of NPK @ 120:60:60 kg/ha. Irrigation treatments were imposed at 15 days after planting. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Results of the experiment revealed that shallow submergence in SRI recorded the hig= hest yield of 6.29 t/ha followed by continuous soil saturation (5.81 t/ha). Traditional transplanted crop with continuous pounding water recorded the g= rain yield of 5.77 t/ha. The lowest yield (4.91t/ha) was obtained under alternate wet and drying at 6 days interval. Yield advantage of SRI over traditional transplanting was less to the tune of 9 and 7 % under shallow pounding and continuous soil saturation respectively. Organic sources of nutrient like FYM and mustard cake recorded more yield (3-8%) than chemical fertilizers.
