System of Rice Intensification (SRI)- Facts ‘n figures

<= span style=3D'font-family:Garamond'>Declining water availability for raising cro= ps and demands of ever increasing population are posing threat to food security. R= ice, the foremost staple food crop consumes maximum water. Water deficit caused = by lags in rainfall occurrence or erratic distribution in its occurrence resul= ts in declined production and productivity. Thus finding ways of water saving = crop establishment technologies are of great concern in the new century. Differe= nt crop agro technologies compared during the year 2004-05 were wet seeding (d= rum and broadcasting), dry seeding, system of rice intensification (SRI), integrated crop management and modified mat nursery (ICM), Savant’s agro-technologies, conventional transplanting and standard transplanting.

A field experiment was conducted during wet season of 2004-05 at Pantnagar. (290N, 79029’E= and at an elevation of 243.8 m) Uttaranchal, India. High yielding variety Pant Dhan-4 and hybrid KRH–2 in main plot and c= rop establishment methods in sub-plot was studied in a split design (2004). In 2005, crop cultivation techniques SRI, ICM and conventional planting were adopted as per direction given in the AICRP technical programme. Savent’s rice agro-technology was implemented a= s per Savent’s, 2005.

 

The grain yield obtain in different methods did not differ significantly. In 20= 04, the highest grain yield (5.9 t/ha) obtain in ICM was statistically at par w= ith line sowing (5.90 t/ha), SRI system (5.88 t/ha) and normal conventional practice (5.85 t/ha). The differential response of varieties to crop cultivation was non significant. In 2005, conventional agro-technology i.e. transplanting of 20 days old seedlings at 20x10 cm spacing with 2-3 seedlin= gs per hill resulted in highest grain yield (6.52 t/ha) which was statisticall= y at par to SRI (5.84 t/ha), ICM (5.93 t/ha), Drum seeding (5.62 t/ha-1), dry seeding (5.79 t/ha) at 20 cm and broadcast of sprouted seeds (5.52 t/ha= ). The number of panicles was lowest (187/m2) in SRI technology, however it was statistically at par with ICM (222/m2) and conventional (227/m2). Dry seeding, drum seeding and broadcastin= g of sprouted seed had significantly higher number of panicles than SRI. System = of rice intensification was found to save water by about 10-15% than conventio= nal transplanting. It also saved seed by 80 percent. Dry seeding at a distance = of 20 cm in rows with immediate application of pendamitha= lin @ 1 kg ai per ha plus two hand weeding was also= saved water about 10-15 percent than conventional. Beside tiller mortality it maintained higher number of panicles dry matter and resulted more grain yie= ld than SRI, ICM, Savant’s rice agro- technology.
