80 per cent population and a source of livelihood for about 120 &#8211; 150
million rural house holds in <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:country-region w:s=
t=3D"on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place>.
It accounts for about 43 per cent of food grain production in the country. =
Rice
consumes major share of available water for irrigation and now major concer=
n is
that how to economize water use. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI)
provides an opportunity for utilizing irrigation water more effectively with
less seed rate and inorganic fertilizer use. System of Rice Intensification=
 has
recorded 10 &#8211; 20 per cent more grain yield in comparison to conventio=
nal
transplanting at different locations.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=
y:Garamond'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=

trials were conducted during <span class=3DSpellE><span class=3DGramE><i
style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>rabi</i></span></span> 2004-05 and <sp=
an
class=3DSpellE><i style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>kharif</i></span> 20=
05, at
the research farm of Directorate of Rice Research, <span class=3DSpellE>Raj=
endranagar</span>,
<st1:City w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">Hyderabad</st1:place></st1:Cit=
y>. The
experimental site was <span class=3DSpellE>silty</span> clay loam with pH 8=
.2 and
255, 25 and 520 kg/ha available nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, respective=
ly.
Hybrid rice variety KRH-2 was tested with six treatments of SRI -<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>T1 &#8211; SRI + FYM (10 t/ha) + <=
span
class=3DSpellE>conoweeder</span> (4 times); T2 &#8211; SRI + FYM (10 t/ha) =
+ <span
class=3DSpellE>butachlor</span> + <span class=3DSpellE>conoweeder</span> (2=
 times);
T3<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>- SRI + FYM (10 t/ha) + <s=
pan
class=3DSpellE>butachlor</span> + manual weeding; T4 &#8211; SRI + FYM (5 t=
/ha) +
<span class=3DSpellE>conoweeder</span> (4 times); T5 &#8211; SRI + FYM (5 t=
/ha) +
<span class=3DSpellE>butachlor</span> + <span class=3DSpellE>conoweeder</sp=
an> (2
times); T6 &#8211; SRI + FYM (5 t/ha) + <span class=3DSpellE>butachlor</spa=
n> +
manual weeding) in comparison to T7 - direct seeding of sprouted seed and T=
8 -
conventional transplanting. The trial was laid out in random block design w=
ith
three replications. <a name=3D"OLE_LINK1"></a><a name=3D"OLE_LINK2"><span
style=3D'mso-bookmark:OLE_LINK1'>Grain yield differences were significant a=
mong
different treatments. On the basis of mean of two years data, maximum grain
yield of 5.87 t/ha was recorded by SRI + FYM (10 t/ha) + </span></a><span
class=3DSpellE><span style=3D'mso-bookmark:OLE_LINK2'><span style=3D'mso-bo=
okmark:
OLE_LINK1'>butachlor</span></span></span><span style=3D'mso-bookmark:OLE_LI=
NK2'><span
style=3D'mso-bookmark:OLE_LINK1'> (1.5 kg <span class=3DSpellE>a.i</span>./=
ha) +
manual weeding while lowest grain yield (5.23 t/ha) was recorded by
conventional transplanting. The grain yield differences among SRI treatments
were non-significant (5.56 to 5.87 t/ha) and similarly grain yield differen=
ces
between direct seeding of sprouted seed and conventional transplanting were
non-significant. The per cent increase in grain yield was 8 to 10 under SRI
over the mean grain yield of direct seeded and conventional transplanting, =
<span
class=3DSpellE>respectively.Tiller</span> number and panicle No<span class=
=3DGramE>./</span>m<sup>2</sup>
were also differed significantly among different treatments. Mean maximum
tiller number (544/m<sup>2</sup>) and panicle number (516/m<sup>2</sup>),
highest dry matter production (1330 g/m<sup>2</sup>) were recorded by SRI w=
hile
the lowest number of tillers (443/m<sup>2</sup>) panicle (430/m<sup>2</sup>)
and dry matter production (1104 g/m<sup>2</sup>) with conventional
transplanting. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>
