field trial was conducted to study the performance of System of Rice
Intensification (SRI) compared to recommended transplanting method in <span
class=3DSpellE><span class=3DGramE>Typic</span></span> <span class=3DSpellE=
>chromusters</span>
at AP Rice Research Institute during <span class=3DSpellE><i style=3D'mso-b=
idi-font-style:
normal'>rabi</i></span> 2005-06. <span class=3DSpellE>Vijetha</span> (MTU 1=
001)
and <span class=3DSpellE>Cottondora</span> <span class=3DSpellE>Sannalu</sp=
an> (MTU
1010) were tested in SRI and conventional method of cultivation. The results
revealed that between the two varieties the performance of MTU 1001 was
superior under SRI. Observations on no of tillers per m<sup>2</sup> indicate
that during early stages even though transplanting method recorded higher
number of tiller, as the growth advances the SRI method has recorded higher
number of tiller per m<sup>2</sup>. The higher yields in SRI were recorded
(7.170 t/ha with MTU- 1010 and 7.263 t/ha with MTU 1001 which were 4.5% and=
 9.4
% more respectively as compared to transplanting. The increased yields were
attributed to more number of filled grains per panicle and higher panicle
weight. <span class=3DGramE>Studies on water requirement of rice with the h=
elp of
<span class=3DSpellE>parshall</span> flume reveals that, SRI cultivation has
taken 1130 mm of water which was 11.3% lesser as compared to recommended
transplanting (1270 mm).</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
