Performance of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in northern Telangana of = Andhra Pradesh

Field Experiments were conducted to compare performance of rice in System of Rice Intensification (SRI) with normal transplanting at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jagtial and on farmers fields= under Kakatiya canal command area of Sri Ram Sagar Project on red sandy loam soils during kharif an= d = rabi 2005-06. Treatments consists = of SRI (transplanting of 12 days old seedlings at 25 x 25 cm spacing, 4 times rota= ry weeder in both directions at 10 days interval, mainte= nance of saturation upto flowering and thin film of w= ater from flowering to maturity) and normal transplanting (transplanting of 28-32 days old seedlings, 2 seedlings hill^-1 at 20 x 15 cm spacing, ha= nd weeding in addition to application of butachlor= @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha^-1 2 days after transplant= ing, maintenance of + 5 cm water). The crop variety grown was BPT 5204 (150 days duration) and JGL 1798 (135 days duration) during kharif and rabi, respectively and were fertilized with 100:60:40:50= kg ha^-1 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and ZnSO_=
4 with 5 t ha^-1 farm yard manure during kharif and 120:60:40:50 kg = ha^-1 N, P₂O₅, K₂O and ZnSO₄ during <= span class=3DSpellE>rabi. The results of the experiment indi= cated that the crop under SRI recorded 12 per cent and 5 per cent higher grain yi= eld (5992 and 5614 kg ha^-1) than that of normal transplanting (5350 = and 5354 kg ha^-1) during kharif and rabi respectively. The crop under SRI flowered and matured early by 5-9 days than normal transplanting. The higher gra= in yield of rice in SRI is attributed to more number of panicles m^-2 (8-17%), more panicle length (8-11%), higher filled grains per panicle (17-= 30%) coupled with lower unfilled grains per panicle (17-33%) under SRI than that= of normal transplanting. Similar= ly, the data recorded from onfarm trial conducted on farmers fields with JGL 1798 (125 days duration) and IR 64 (120 days durati= on) rice varieties during kharif and rabi seasons, respectively under Kakatiya canal comm= and indicated that there was 5 and 4 per cent higher grain yield of rice under = SRI (5620 and 5374 kg ha^-1) as compared to normal transplanting (5238 and 5162 kg ha^-1) during kharif and rabi seasons respectively.
