The main features of this system are: transplanting of young seedlings singly in a square pattern with wide spacing, using organic fertilizers and hand weedin= g, and keeping the paddy soil moist during the vegetative growth phase. Significant phenotypic changes occur in plant structure and function but no significant yield differences were observed compared with the conventional transplanting system. The SRI farming system may be attributed to the vigor= ous and healthy growth, development of more productive tillers and leaves ensur= ing greater resource utilization in the SRI compared to conventional transplant= ing and ICM systems. Therefore, SRI farming systems could be introduced to small-scale rice farmers in <st1:place w:st=3D"on">Punjab</st1:place> as a sustainable farming system.
