A spacing of 25 x 25 cm in a uniform square patt= ern is normally adopted. However practical adaptability of planting single seed= ling in square method becomes very tedious under field conditions and farmers fi= nd it difficult to mark the recommended spacing with the conventional method of using rope as marker.To overcome this constrain= t, the Krishi Vigyan Kendr= a, Madurai has developed an handy implement, the rolling marker. This marker when rolled on wet paddy field makes uniform square impressions. The uniform spacing stamped by the rolling marker facilitates easy operation of cono / rotary weeders. Th= is implement is very handy, easy to operate, does not require skilled labour and is economical. Above all it reduces the hu= man drudgery of square planting which prevent the farmers from adopting <st1:st= ockticker w:st=3D"on">SRI</st1:stockticker> method of cultivation. <o:p></o:p>= <o:p> </o:p> An improvement over the existing square planting in <st1:stockticker w:st=3D"o= n">SRI</st1:stockticker> is the adoption of zigzag planting which still reduces the competition and = easy usage of the cono / rotary weeders. To easily adopt zigzag planting, modified triangular rolling marker has also been developed and evaluated under field conditions. This more advantageous method of zigzag planting cannot be adopted using the conventional rope mar= king and can only be followed using triangular roller markers. For effective mar= king of square or triangular impressions, after puddling</s= pan> and perfect leveling, the paddy field has to be completely drained before transplanting.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Trials conducted comparing triangular planting over square planting revealed an increase of 15 per cent in tillering. Further, = the triangular marker was modified to make oblong impressions. Unlike the triangular method, where the seedlings are planted in a zig-zag pattern with 25 cm spacing between each seedling and also between the rows,= in the oblong method, the row to row spacing was the same 25 cm but the seedli= ng to seedling spacing was 30 cm. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The oblong method of planting (utilizing oblong marker) registered 25.29 and 14= .07 per cent increased tillering over square and tr= iangle planting which might have been due to increased aeration and light penetrat= ion with reduced competition.
