eight diverse rice genotypes were grown under aerobic condition at Zonal
Agricultural Research Station, <span class=3DSpellE>V.C.Farm</span>, <span
class=3DSpellE>Mandya</span> and studied the relationship among 12 yield and
yield component characters <i style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>viz.,</i=
> days
to 50% flowering, plant height, leaves per hill, productive tillers per hil=
l,
panicle length, <span class=3DSpellE>spikelet</span> fertility, grains per
panicle, test weight, grain yield per hill, harvest index, carbon isotope
discrimination (&#8710; <sup>13</sup> C) and leaf area duration (LAD). Simi=
lar
studies were also made on four different root traits <i>viz. </i>root lengt=
h,<i>
</i>root volume<i>, </i>root dry weight and oxygen isotope enrichment (</sp=
an><span
style=3D'font-family:Symbol;mso-ascii-font-family:Garamond;mso-hansi-font-f=
amily:
Garamond;mso-char-type:symbol;mso-symbol-font-family:Symbol'><span
style=3D'mso-char-type:symbol;mso-symbol-font-family:Symbol'>d</span></span=

</i>of<i> </i>20 high yielding genotypes selected from among the 48 genotyp=
es.
Further, the contribution of each character towards grain yield was also
studied through path <span class=3DGramE>coefficient</span> analyses. <o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

y:Garamond'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=
y:Garamond'>Correlation
studies revealed that days taken to 50 per cent flowering had highly
significant positive influence on grain yield both at genotypic and phenoty=
pic
levels. Further, grains per panicle, panicle length, leaves per <span
class=3DGramE>hill<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>and</span>=
 LAD
exhibited positive and significant influence on grain yield at genotypic le=
vel
while, harvest index showed positive significant influence on grain yield at
phenotypic level only. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

y:Garamond'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=
y:Garamond'>The
direct and indirect effects of component traits on grain yield has revealed=
 by
the path coefficient analysis, harvest index had maximum positive direct ef=
fect
on grain yield at phenotypic level while, days to 50% flowering had maximum
positive direct effect on grain yield both at phenotypic and genotypic leve=
ls.
Panicle length and plant height also showed maximum positive direct effect =
on
grain yield.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Productive tille=
rs and
LAD had moderate levels of direct influence on grain yield. On the contrary
grains per panicle, <span class=3DSpellE>spikelet</span> fertility, test we=
ight,
leaves per hill and harvest index at genotypic level; panicle length, test
weight, leaves per hill and &#8710;<sup>13</sup>C at phenotypic level
registered negative influence on grain yield. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
