phenomenon namely System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is of particular
significance to the <span class=3DSpellE>Cauvery</span> Delta Zone (CDZ), T=
amil <span
class=3DSpellE>Nadu</span>, for two specific reasons. (<span class=3DSpellE=
>i</span>)
Scarcity of water (ii) Increasing input costs. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=

style=3D'mso-tab-count:1'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&=
nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=
y:Garamond'><span

SRI approach focused on five factors viz., young seedling (14 d), one seedl=
ing
per hill, square planting (22.5 cm x 22.5 cm), mechanical weeding with soil
stirring by a <span class=3DSpellE>cono-weeder</span> and intermittent
irrigation.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>On farm as =
well
as on station trials were conducted during <span class=3DSpellE>Kuruvai</sp=
an>
(Dry) season of 2002 to evaluate SRI.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>One farm each in <span class=3DSpellE>Aaarupathi</span> and <span
class=3DSpellE>Kathiramangalam</span> in <span class=3DSpellE>Cauvery</span=
> old
delta and two farms in <span class=3DSpellE>Edamelayur</span> in <span
class=3DSpellE>Cauvery</span> New Delta were selected as the sites for tria=
ls,
besides one on station trial at Tamil <span class=3DSpellE>Nadu</span> Rice
Research Institute, <span class=3DSpellE><span class=3DGramE>Aduthurai</spa=
n></span><span
class=3DGramE>.</span> The trials had two treatments as comparison of SRI w=
ith
conventional method of rice cultivation in non replicated observation
plot.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>The conventional =
method
of rice cultivation had the components of 25 day seedlings, multiple
seedling/hill, random planting, hand weeding and continuous flooding. <o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=
y:Garamond'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-famil=
y:Garamond'><span
style=3D'mso-tab-count:1'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&=
nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>The
SRI method gave the highest grain yield of 7.650 and 5.680 t/ha in <span
class=3DSpellE>Aaarupathi</span> and <span class=3DSpellE>Kathiramangalam</=
span>,
respectively, and 5.730 and 7.443 t/ha in farm 1 and farm 2 respectively in=
 the
<span class=3DSpellE>Edamelaiyur</span>.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>This represents an increase =
of
grain yield over that of traditional practices to the tune of 48 and 40% in=
 <span
class=3DSpellE>Aaarupathi</span> and <span class=3DSpellE>Kathiramangalam</=
span>,
respectively, and 50 and 49% in farm 1 and farm 2 at <span class=3DSpellE>E=
damelaiyur</span>.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The superiority of SRI was also ob=
served
in the On-station trial which recorded grain yield of 7.314 t/ha as compare=
d to
5554 t/ha in traditional practices (an increase of 31%). These increased gr=
ain
yields in SRI was due to lengthier and higher number of panicles per unit a=
rea,
more filled grains per panicle and lower sterility percentage through better
soil, water and nutrient management.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>The data also confirmed that when grown under SRI, rice is capable of
utilizing fertilizer N very efficiently thereby saving of 10-25 kg N/ha. The
SRI has potential for improving yield and nutrient efficiency, besides redu=
cing
cost at farm level as compared to <span class=3DSpellE>labour</span> intens=
ive
traditionally transplanted rice. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
