Muralidharan<o:p></o:p> Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TNAU), Aduthurai 612 101, TN<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o= :p> The System of Rice Intensification represents an integrated and agro ecological= ly sound approach to irrigated rice cultivation which may offer new opportunit= ies for location – specific production systems of small farmers.<o:p></o:= p> <o:p></o:p> A study was conducted in Thanjavur district of Ta= mil Nadu, under the sponsorship of Government of Tamil <s= pan class=3DSpellE>Nadu through a special scheme for popularization of S= RI method in this region with the following objectives<o:= p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> <![if !supportLists]>-&nb= sp; = <![endif]>To analyze the adoption behaviour of farmers about SRI practic= es<o:p></o:p> <![if !supportLists]>-&nb= sp; = <![endif]>To know the constraints in adopting SRI practices<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Fifty farmers who followed SRI method of cultivation were interviewed with the we= ll structured interview schedule. The analysis of the collected data showed th= at there was positive association between the variables, education, size of holding and scientific orientation and adoption of SRI practices. About ninety percentage of respond= ents followed all the recommended SRI practices viz., mat nursery, young seedling, single seedling, square planting, cono weeding and using leaf colo= ur chart to apply nitrogenous fertilizer. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Regarding the advantages of SRI cent per cent of respondents reported about the incre= ase in yield and reduction in seed rate, water requirement and the application = of nitrogenous fertilizer.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The main constraints reported by the farmers for large scale adoption were 1) difficult to follow single seedling method (42% of respondents), 2) square planting (55%) ad 3) operating cono weeder (28%).<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The study clearly revealed that SRI method is more advantageous than convention= al method in terms of yield increase and lesser manpower requirement which resulted in higher cost benefit ratio.
