the middle of this century, there will be about one-third less arable land
available per capita, and probably an even greater reduction in the
availability of water for agricultural purposes. Hence productivity of land=

water will have to be more than doubled if food supply is to meet the deman=
ds.
The question of yield potential-how to keep moving up the maximum attainable
yield-has begun to trouble many scientists. Therefore, it is imperative to
adopt new approaches and identify approach-specific genotypes. Rice being t=
he
predominant crop of wet season in <span class=3DSpellE>Chhattisgarh</span> =
state,
there is an urgent need to raise its current productivity especially in
irrigated environments initially. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

late, the system of rice intensification (SRI) is gaining popularity among =
rice
farmers in several states of the country for its potential to save water and
increase yields. Keeping this in view, a study is being carried out at IGAU
farm, <span class=3DSpellE>Raipur</span> to identify the suitable genotypes=
 of
rice specifically for SRI and traditional method of rice cultivation and
explore the genetic yield potential of 18 early maturing (95-105 days) rice
cultivars during the wet season of 2006.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

number of productive tillers per hill and length of panicle suggested that
values were marginally better for all the genotypes under SRI as compare wi=
th
those under traditional method of cultivation.<span

ed
34.5% higher number of productive tillers, while<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>R 1102-2795-3-1 recorded 50.=
8%
greater length of panicle under SRI.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>The increase in above two important yield-attributing characters
indicated similar increase in the yield of above genotypes to be of the same
