Poster on Livestock in Watershed...
Purpose of any developmental initiative is providing
livelihood options to people either directly or
indirectly. In that context, uncovered aspects are to
be brought into fore so as to give a holistic approach
to the programme. An attempt is made to put this into
practice through a theme poster on Livestock in
Watershed programme.
Encompasses the critical issues and key aspects to
focus on Livestock in Watershed activities. Intended
objective is to inform and enable the stakeholders to
speak on these relevant issues and make them part of
the main process.
Developed and published with support from CWS and AEI,
Luxembourg.
Capitalisation of Livestock Programme Experiences
India (CALPI)
Summary: The paper focuses on critical issues and
approaches related to small ruminants. Some of the
critical issues highlighted are poor awareness
regarding the importance of small ruminants in
livestock system, absence or weak rearers associations
and ignorance of small ruminant rearers in social
organization. Various approaches to these issues have
been addressed in this paper. Another critical issue
emphasised is pressure on fodder resource base,
wherein declining area of CPRs, low priority to common
land development are discussed. Other concerns
discussed in the paper are inadequate veterinary
health, inadequate focus on genetic improvement,
reduced access to credit and insurance, inefficient
marketing mechanisms and poor inter-departmental
coordination. Some interesting case studies concerning
silvo-pasture intervention and Joint Forest Management
in villages of Rajasthan, Ram lambs rearing and
Malabari Goat Breed Improvement Programme (MGBIP) are
discussed.

programmatic efficiency focusing the situation of
resource poor segments of the population. The report
also has a set of hypotheses, which help to establish
a baseline of existing literature and documentation of
Livestock Environment Interactions on watershed level
in India. The results are grouped in 16 major findings
in the form of a contextual description and
conclusions. The report proposes the areas of Analysis
of the changes of dynamics and distribution of
