Focus:

The main focus of the workshop was to help NGOs create an online presence for their organization through a website, giving information to visitors regarding their programmes, activities, concepts, and ideology. Keeping in view the ‘Not-for-profit’ nature of these organizations it was decided that very nominal fees be charged for the services rendered.

The workshop was conducted with logistics being handled by WASSAN, and support for web-services through Domain registration and Web-hosting being provided by THRIVE. Team members from WASSAN and THRIVE actively participated and made valuable contributions in the website development processes.

Web Development Methodology:

As the focus was to develop as many websites as possible within the stipulated duration of the workshop, the following strategy was adopted:

1.      Delegates from participating organizations were appraised well in advance of the workshop, as to the material that they needed to bring with them to the workshop.

2.      Delegates were requested to bring most content about their organization to be included in the website, such as write-ups, images, graphics etc., in digitized format so as to reduce production time. In cases where digitized versions were not available, such as field photographs, paper clippings, brochures, etc., provision was made to digitize these items by scanning them and using the extracts.

3.      Requirements of the organization website were collected and specified through a brief interactive session between the delegate and web developers. These included details such as Name and Address of the Organization, Domain Name required, email Id’s required, sections needed within the website, and choice of a design template for the website from a wide range of readymade, free templates.

4.      Based on the above requirement specifications, a supply chain mode of development was adopted, where the development of the website would be carried out in several incremental states as given below:

a.       Gathering of requirements and generation of specifications.

b.      Search and registration of appropriate domain name.

c.       Choosing of an appropriate design template for the website.

d.     Customization of the design template as per the organizations requirements, such as incorporation or creation of logo, creation of template pages for website sections, and providing navigation through hyper linking the pages.

e.       Incorporation of the digitized content into the specified sections.

f.        Testing and fine-tuning the website, preparing it for upload to the hosting service.

g.       Configuration of web hosting service, creation of user accounts, and uploading content to the website.

Team members from WASSAN, THRIVE, assumed different roles based on their experience and expertise, to play a part of the supply chain model.

 Workshop events:

The workshop spanned over 3 days, 6th, 7th, and 8th January 2006. During the 3 days allocated for the workshop, delegates whose work was not completed on the same day due to lack of data or non-availability in digital form, were requested to come on the subsequent day with the required details. In certain cases where required content was not immediately available with the delegates, option was given to send the content at the earliest in digital form through email to the web developers who will incorporate the items into the website. The last day of the workshop was dedicated to completion of the spillover work from the previous two days.

Sufficient workstations and peripherals were provided by WASSAN, with one computer dedicated for Internet connectivity, which as used to perform Domain name registrations and account configurations.

Skilled staff from WASSAN and THRIVE helped in all states of website development which helped reduce production time effectively and close the workshop on a successful note.
