Introduction
The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment (DA&FE), Government of Odisha, launched Odisha Millets Mission (OMM) as a flagship program in 2017-18. OMM is a uniquely designed government-led multi-stakeholder intervention focusing on developing a sustainable food system of millets in the rainfed areas of Odisha and ensuring nutritional security to at least 5 million households of vulnerable and indigenous communities in Odisha. The essential elements under the program include; a decentralized operational framework, financial and institutional support from the government through convergence and enabling policies, promotion of rural enterprise in the millet value chain, awareness campaigns for behavior change, efforts to support household consumption, and the revival of indigenous culture.
.
During 2017-18 OMM was introduced in 30 blocks covering seven districts. By 2021-22 it was extended to 84 blocks covering 15 districts. In 2022 the program covered 143 blocks in 19 districts. Now we are covering 177 blocks in 30 districts. The scaling up of the OMM shows the success and acceptance of the program by the communities of Odisha.
